How AP & IB Credits Work
Taking Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) exams in high school is one of the best ways to reduce the cost of college. If you score highly on these standardized exams, colleges will award you credit for equivalent introductory classes.
Because college tuition is charged "per credit" or "per semester", entering college with 15 or 30 credits already completed can allow you to graduate a full semester or even a year early, saving you tens of thousands of dollars.
College Credit Policies Vary Wildly
There is no universal standard for how colleges accept AP or IB scores. It depends entirely on the tier and location of the university:
1. Elite Private Universities (Ivy League)
Top-tier schools like Harvard, MIT, or Stanford are notorious for not granting credit for AP exams. Even if you get a perfect 5, they argue their introductory classes are vastly superior to high school AP classes. They may give you Advanced Placement (allowing you to skip Biology 101 and go straight to Biology 201), but they won't give you the 3 credits, meaning you still have to pay for 4 full years of tuition.
2. State Flagship Universities
Large public universities (like UT Austin, UMich, or UF) are very generous with AP/IB credits. They typically require a score of 4 or 5. A student entering a state school with 10 AP classes can often start as a Sophomore.
3. State Legislation
In states like Texas, Florida, and California, state laws mandate that public colleges and community colleges must award course credit for any AP exam score of 3 or higher.
What about IB Standard Level (SL)?
Unfortunately, almost no universities in the United States award college credit for IB Standard Level (SL) exams, regardless of the score. Credit is strictly reserved for IB Higher Level (HL) exams with scores of 5, 6, or 7.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does AP credit count toward my GPA?
No. When a college awards you credit for an AP exam, it appears on your college transcript as "Transfer Credit" or "Pass". It gives you the credits required to graduate, but it does not factor into your college GPA calculation.
Are AP exams worth the cost?
Yes. An AP exam costs roughly $98. If that exam earns you 3 college credits, and your college charges $400 per credit hour, that $98 exam just saved you $1,200. It is one of the highest ROI investments a high school student can make.
