How We Calculate Your Admission Chances
College admissions, particularly in the United States, use a "holistic" review process. This means that while your numbers (GPA and SAT) are critical, they aren't the only deciding factor. Our algorithm weighs four major components to generate your Application Strength Score:
- Unweighted GPA (40%): Your core academic performance over four years.
- Standardized Tests (30%): Even at test-optional schools, a high SAT/ACT score significantly boosts your profile.
- Course Rigor (15%): Did you take the hardest classes available at your school (AP/IB/Dual Enrollment)? A 3.8 GPA with 10 AP classes is often viewed better than a 4.0 with no honors classes.
- Extracurriculars (15%): Leadership, state-level awards, and meaningful community impact.
Understanding University Tiers
Ivy League & Elite (Top 20)
Examples: Harvard, MIT, Stanford, UPenn, Duke.
These schools have acceptance rates below 10%. For these schools, there is no such thing as a "Safety" or a "Target" for anyone. Even if you have a 4.0 GPA, a 1600 SAT, and cured a disease, these schools are always considered a "Reach".
Top 50 Universities
Examples: NYU, UT Austin, University of Florida, UNC Chapel Hill.
Highly competitive. You generally need an unweighted GPA above 3.8 and an SAT above 1400. Strong extracurriculars are required to push these from a Reach into a Target category.
State Flagships & Top 100
Examples: Penn State, Rutgers, FSU, Indiana University.
These are excellent target schools for students with solid B+/A- averages (3.4+ GPA) and standard SAT scores (1200+). They rely more heavily on numbers and less heavily on extravagant extracurriculars.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is considered a 'Safety', 'Target', and 'Reach' school?
A 'Safety' school is one where your GPA and SAT scores are well above the 75th percentile of admitted students (80%+ chance). A 'Target' school matches your stats closely (40-60% chance). A 'Reach' school is one where your stats are below average, or any elite school with an acceptance rate under 15%, regardless of your stats.
Is a 4.0 GPA enough for the Ivy League?
No. Tens of thousands of high school valedictorians apply to the Ivy League every year. A perfect 4.0 GPA and a 1600 SAT only gets your foot in the door. You must have exceptional, national-level extracurriculars and outstanding essays to be admitted.
