The Alphabet Soup of Indian Grading
When you enter your first year of an Indian engineering college (B.Tech/B.E) or any major undergraduate degree, you are suddenly hit with a massive wave of acronyms on your scorecard: SGPA, CGPA, and sometimes YGPA.
If you don't understand the difference between these three metrics, you will not be able to track your progress toward campus placements or graduation honors.
Here is the exact mathematical difference between SGPA, CGPA, and YGPA.
1. SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average)
What it is: The SGPA is a temporary, short-term metric. It calculates your academic performance for one single semester. How it works: If you take 6 subjects in Semester 3, your SGPA is the weighted average of the grades you received in just those 6 subjects. The "weight" is determined by the credits assigned to each subject. Once Semester 3 ends, that SGPA is locked. When Semester 4 begins, your SGPA resets to zero.
2. YGPA (Yearly Grade Point Average)
What it is: The YGPA is a mid-term metric. It calculates your academic performance across one entire academic year (which usually consists of two semesters). How it works: Your First Year YGPA is the combined weighted average of Semester 1 and Semester 2. Your Second Year YGPA is the combined weighted average of Semester 3 and Semester 4.
This metric is incredibly important for students studying under boards like MAKAUT (Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology), which relies heavily on YGPA to determine if a student is promoted to the next academic year. If your YGPA is too low, you may suffer a "Year Lag."
3. CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average)
What it is: The CGPA is the ultimate, permanent metric. It is the weighted average of all semesters you have completed so far.How it works: When you graduate, the only number that companies, foreign universities, and the government care about is your final CGPA. It is the sum total of your entire academic journey.
A massive mistake students make is simply adding up their SGPAs and dividing by the number of semesters. Because different semesters have different total credits, you cannot do this. You must calculate CGPA based on total credits attempted.

The Summary
When you sit for campus placements with TCS, Infosys, or Amazon, HR will filter your resume based purely on your CGPA (usually requiring a minimum of 7.0 or 8.0). Keep your eye on the Cumulative prize!
