GPA for Medical School

Real GPA benchmarks for MD and DO programs, the science GPA that matters most, and strategies for every starting point.

The Numbers

These are based on AAMC data for recent applicant cycles.

MD Programs (Allopathic)

Average accepted applicant:

  • Overall GPA~3.73
  • Science GPA (BCPM)~3.65
  • Minimum to be competitive3.5

DO Programs (Osteopathic)

Average accepted applicant:

  • Overall GPA~3.54
  • Science GPA (BCPM)~3.44
  • Minimum to be competitive3.3

Science GPA (BCPM) Matters

AMCAS (the MD application system) calculates your science GPA separately from courses in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics — called BCPM. Both your overall GPA and BCPM GPA appear on every medical school application.

A significant gap between your overall and science GPA — in either direction — will be noticed by admissions committees. Use the Science GPA Calculator to track yours separately.

Can You Get In With a Low GPA?

Yes — but the path requires intentional effort. A low GPA can be partially offset by an exceptional MCAT score, strong research experience, meaningful clinical hours, and compelling letters of recommendation.

A formal post-bacc program(either academic or career-changer track) is the most common way applicants rebuild a GPA below 3.3. A DIY approach — carefully selecting upper-division science courses and earning straight A's — also works.
