Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate my NCEA rank score?
Your NCEA rank score is calculated using your best 80 credits at Level 3. You are awarded 4 points for every Excellence credit, 3 points for every Merit credit, and 2 points for every Achieved credit. Unit standard credits (which are only Achieved) count as 2 points. A maximum of 320 points can be achieved.
What is a good NCEA rank score for University of Auckland?
For the University of Auckland, a 'good' score depends entirely on the program. A Bachelor of Arts usually requires a Rank Score of 150. A Bachelor of Commerce requires 180-210. Highly competitive programs like Engineering require 260+, and Medicine (Biomedical Science pathway) essentially requires 280+ to be competitive.
Do achieved credits count towards rank score?
Yes! Every Achieved credit is worth 2 points towards your rank score. However, because the calculation only takes your top 80 credits overall, if you have a lot of Excellence (4 pts) and Merit (3 pts) credits, your Achieved credits might get pushed out and excluded from the final calculation.
What is the maximum NCEA rank score?
The absolute maximum NCEA rank score is 320. To get a perfect 320, you must obtain at least 80 Excellence credits at Level 3 (80 credits x 4 points = 320 points).
