What is the German Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte)?
The Chancenkarte is a new residence permit introduced in June 2024 that allows skilled non-EU workers to come to Germany for up to one year to look for a job. During this time, you can work up to 20 hours a week in any part-time job.
What are the basic requirements to even apply?
Before points are even counted, you MUST have: 1) A university degree or at least 2 years of vocational training recognized in your home country, 2) German proficiency at A1 level OR English at B2 level, and 3) Proof of financial support (e.g., a blocked account with ~€11,208).
Do I need points if my degree is fully recognized in Germany?
No! If you have a foreign qualification that is fully recognized as equivalent in Germany, you can bypass the points system entirely and get the Opportunity Card directly, provided you can support yourself financially.
What are 'bottleneck professions'?
These are professions suffering from severe skilled worker shortages in Germany. Examples include IT specialists, engineers, doctors, nurses, teachers, and certain trades. Having a degree in one of these fields gives you 1 extra point.
