Understanding the UK Degree Classification System

Unlike the US system which uses a 4.0 GPA scale based on letter grades, the UK higher education system grades students using a percentage-based approach, which is then mapped to a degree classification (Honours).

  • First-Class Honours (1st): 70% and above. This is the highest level of degree, equivalent to an A average in the US.
  • Upper Second-Class Honours (2:1): 60% - 69%. This is a very good degree and is often the minimum requirement for many graduate programs and top employers.
  • Lower Second-Class Honours (2:2): 50% - 59%. Equivalent to a B/C average in the US.
  • Third-Class Honours (3rd): 40% - 49%. The lowest passing honours degree.
  • Fail: Below 40%.

Your overall degree classification is usually determined by your Weighted Average Mark (WAM), calculated by weighting your module marks by their credit value.
