How hard is it to get a First Class degree?

A First Class Honours degree (often just called a "First") is the highest classification you can achieve at a UK university, requiring a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 70% or higher.

32%

Of UK students achieved a First in 2022/2023

7%

Of UK students achieved a First in the 1990s

While a 70% might sound low to an American student (where 70% is a C- grade), in the UK grading system, achieving above 70% is incredibly difficult. It requires exceptional critical thinking, original research, and flawless exam execution. A First is roughly equivalent to a 4.0 GPA in the US system.

The Borderline Zone (68% - 69.9%)

If your final average lands between 68% and 69.9%, you are in the "borderline zone." Most universities have a specific policy for this. They will usually look at your "exit velocity" (did you perform better in your final year than your second year?) or the number of credits you scored a First in. If your profile is strong enough, the examination board may uplift your degree to a First.
