How the Bavarian Formula Works

The German grading scale operates backwards compared to most systems. A 1.0 is the absolute best score, while a 4.0 is the minimum passing grade. Anything between 4.1 and 5.0 is considered a fail.

German Grade = 1 + 3 * [ (Nmax - Nd) / (Nmax - Nmin) ]

What is the Bavarian Formula (Modifizierte Bayerische Formel)?
The Modified Bavarian Formula is the official mathematical formula used by German universities and uni-assist to convert foreign grades (like a US GPA or Indian CGPA) into the German grading system (where 1.0 is the best and 4.0 is the minimum passing grade).
How do I find my country's maximum and minimum passing grade?
You must use the grading scale specific to your university. For example, in the Indian 10-point CGPA system, the maximum grade is usually 10.0 and the minimum passing grade is often 4.0 or 5.0. In the US, the maximum is usually 4.0 and the minimum passing for a degree might be 2.0. Always check your university transcript's legend.
What is a good German grade for Master's admissions?
For highly competitive programs (like Data Science or Engineering at TU Munich or RWTH Aachen), a converted German grade of 1.5 to 2.0 is often required. Less competitive programs may accept a 2.5 or 3.0.
Does uni-assist round the final Bavarian formula grade?
Yes, uni-assist typically calculates the grade to one decimal place. They do not round up; instead, only the first digit after the decimal point is taken (e.g., a calculated 1.78 becomes 1.7).
