Frequently Asked Questions
NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation) typically requires a GATE score of 780+ for Mechanical and Electrical Engineering branches for General category candidates. The cutoff fluctuates slightly each year based on the number of vacancies and total applicants. NTPC shortlists candidates for a Group Discussion and Personal Interview based on GATE score merit. OBC-NCL candidates typically need 720+ and SC/ST candidates 680+.
Top PSUs recruiting through GATE 2026 include ONGC, NTPC, IOCL (Indian Oil), BHEL, GAIL, BPCL, HPCL, PGCIL (PowerGrid), NHPC, DRDO, ISRO, BSNL, CIL (Coal India), and many state electricity boards. Maharatna companies (ONGC, NTPC, IOCL, BHEL, GAIL, SAIL, CIL) offer the highest pay packages. Most shortlist based purely on GATE score followed by an interview.
Your GATE score is valid for 3 years from the date of result announcement. A GATE 2026 score (released March 2026) will be valid until March 2029. Many PSUs recruit annually, so you can apply with the same GATE score in 2026, 2027, and 2028 drives. However, higher scores in later attempts will replace older scores if you re-appear.
A GATE score of 600 limits your PSU options to Miniratna and smaller state PSUs. Most Maharatna and Navratna PSUs (ONGC, NTPC, IOCL) require 700–780+ for General category in popular branches like ME and EE. However, for less competitive branches or reserved categories, 600 may be sufficient for some PSUs. WAPCOS, NMDC, and some state electricity boards occasionally have lower cutoffs.
No. GATE score is used only for initial shortlisting. After shortlisting, most PSUs conduct a Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI) or a written examination to finalize selection. The final merit list is typically 85% GATE score + 15% interview performance, though this ratio varies by PSU. Some PSUs like PGCIL have no GD/PI and select purely on GATE rank, making your normalized score the only deciding factor.
