Understanding NEET Rank Inflation

If you are targeting NEET 2026, the biggest hurdle is rank inflation. As the number of test-takers has climbed past 23 million, the competition at the top has become fierce.

In 2021 and 2022, a score of 630 could easily secure a rank inside the top 10,000. However, due to easier papers and increased competition in recent years, you now likely need 680+ marks to break into that same top 10,000 tier.

How to Use This Predictor for Counseling

Our calculator uses a conservative linear interpolation model based on the massive rank shifts observed between 2023 and 2025.

Government Medical College (MBBS)

Use the All India Rank (AIR) generated to check if you fall within the 25,000 rank cutoff (for General category).

BDS / BAMS / BHMS

If your rank is above the MBBS cutoffs, use the prediction to check previous year opening and closing ranks for dental and AYUSH courses.

State Quota vs AIQ

Remember, this predicts your All India Rank. Your state rank will be different via the 85% state quota.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many marks are required for a Government Medical College (MBBS)?
Due to rising competition, a safe score for General and OBC categories via the All India Quota (AIQ) is generally 650+ marks. For SC and ST candidates, a score above 550+ and 510+ respectively is usually required.
Why is the NEET cutoff so high?
The NEET cutoff has skyrocketed in recent years because over 23 to 24 lakh students appear for the exam, while the number of government MBBS seats is highly limited (roughly 55,000 to 60,000). If the paper is even slightly 'easy', rank inflation happens massively.
What happens if two students get the same marks in NEET?
NTA resolves ties using a strict tie-breaking policy: Candidate with higher marks in Biology gets the higher rank. If still tied, it goes to Chemistry, then Physics. If it's still a tie, the candidate with a lower proportion of incorrect answers gets the better rank.
Is 600 a good score in NEET 2026?
While 600 used to be an excellent score, recent rank inflation means a score of 600 might only secure an All India Rank around 75,000 - 80,000. It is often not enough for a Government Medical College for the General category via AIQ, though state quotas or BDS/BAMS might still be possible.
What is the difference between All India Quota (AIQ) and State Quota?
15% of all Government Medical College seats across India are reserved for AIQ, meaning any student from any state can apply. The remaining 85% are State Quota seats, strictly for students domiciled in that specific state. State quota cutoffs are generally slightly lower than AIQ cutoffs.
Is there any normalization in NEET?
No, NEET is a single-day, single-session exam. All candidates take the exam under similar conditions, so there is no normalization process like in JEE Mains. Ranks are strictly based on absolute marks out of 720.
