Frequently Asked Questions

What is a contextual offer UK?
A contextual offer is a reduced A-Level grade requirement (usually 1 or 2 grades lower than the standard offer) given by UK universities to applicants from disadvantaged or underrepresented backgrounds. For example, if the standard offer is A*AA, a contextual offer might be AAB.
How do I know if I qualify for a contextual offer?
Universities automatically assess your eligibility using the postcode you put on your UCAS application. They check your POLAR4 quintile and your IMD (Index of Multiple Deprivation) decile. You also automatically qualify if you tick the 'Care Leaver', 'Free School Meals', or 'Refugee' boxes on UCAS.
What is POLAR4 quintile 1?
POLAR4 (Participation of Local Areas) classifies UK postcodes into 5 quintiles based on the proportion of 18-year-olds who enter higher education. Quintile 1 represents areas with the lowest higher education participation rates. Being in Quintile 1 almost always flags you for a contextual offer.
Do contextual offers lower entry requirements?
Yes. They explicitly lower the A-Level grades you need to achieve in your summer exams. However, they do not guarantee you will get an offer. You still must have a strong personal statement, good predicted grades, and perform well in any required interviews or admissions tests.
