The "2:1 Minimum" Rule

Historically, almost all major graduate employers in the UK (Investment Banks, Big 4 Accounting, Magic Circle Law firms) used a strict 2:1 (Upper Second-Class) cut-off. If you got a 2:2, your application was automatically filtered out by the ATS (Applicant Tracking System).

However, this landscape is shifting:

  • The Big 4: PwC removed the 2:1 requirement entirely in 2022, moving to assessment-based hiring. EY also accepts a 2:2 for many roles.
  • Tech Giants: Companies like Google and Amazon care far more about your technical interview performance (e.g., LeetCode) and portfolio than your exact degree classification, though a 2:1 is still heavily preferred.
  • Finance & Law: Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and top corporate law firms still overwhelmingly enforce a strict 2:1 minimum, with a preference for Firsts.

Mitigating Circumstances

If you achieved a 2:2 but the employer requires a 2:1, you can sometimes bypass the filter if you have valid mitigating circumstances (e.g., severe illness during final exams). You will need to contact the graduate recruitment team directly to explain your situation and provide evidence.
