Understanding UK University Offers

When you apply to a UK university through UCAS, you will receive either a Grade-based offer or a Tariff-based offer.

  • Grade-based offers: Most top universities (especially the Russell Group) give offers based strictly on grades (e.g., "AAB" or "A*AA"). They usually require these grades in specific subjects relevant to your course.
  • Tariff-based offers: Other universities will give an offer based on UCAS Tariff points (e.g., "120 UCAS points"). This gives you more flexibility, as you can reach 120 points through various combinations of A-Levels, BTECs, or EPQs (e.g., BBB = 120 points, but so does A*CC).

What about the EPQ?

The Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) is worth half the UCAS points of a full A-Level (an A* in an EPQ is 28 points). While top universities like Oxford and Cambridge do not lower their grade requirements if you have an EPQ, many other excellent universities (like Sheffield, Bath, or Southampton) might offer a "dual offer": ABB, or BBB + an A in your EPQ.
