How Year Weighting Works in the UK

In the US, every credit counts equally toward your final GPA regardless of when you took the class. In the UK, when you take a class matters heavily for your final degree classification.

  • Year 1: Typically worth 0% of your final degree. You simply need to pass (average ≥40%) to progress to Year 2.
  • Year 2: Typically worth 25% to 40% of your final degree.
  • Year 3 (Final Year): Typically worth 60% to 75% of your final degree.

This system exists to allow you to settle into university life and make mistakes in your first year without permanently damaging your degree. It rewards upward academic progression.
