The UK Resit Cap Explained

If you fail a module (score below 40%) at a UK university, you are usually offered a chance to retake the exam or resubmit the coursework. This is known as a resit.

The "Capped at 40%" Rule

For almost all UK universities, your resit grade is capped at the minimum pass mark of 40%. This means that even if you study incredibly hard and score 95% on the resit exam, the grade recorded on your transcript and used to calculate your final degree will only be 40%.

Are there exceptions?

Yes. If you failed due to severe illness, bereavement, or other "Extenuating Circumstances" (often called mitigating circumstances), and your university accepts your evidence, you may be granted a "first attempt" resit (sometimes called a deferral).

In these specific cases, your resit grade is uncapped, meaning whatever score you get is exactly what is recorded on your transcript. Use the toggle in our calculator above to see the difference between a capped and uncapped resit.
