Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good UCAT score for UK medical schools?
A 'good' UCAT score depends entirely on the specific university you are applying to. However, a score above 2750 (typically 8th decile) is considered highly competitive for most medical and dental schools in the UK and Australia. Scoring above 2880 (9th decile) makes you a strong candidate for elite programs like King's College London or Edinburgh.
What does 8th decile mean in UCAT?
The 8th decile means that your score is in the top 20% of all candidates who took the exam that year. Deciles group students into 10% blocks. The 9th decile represents the top 10% (the absolute highest scorers).
Does SJT Band 3 mean rejection?
Not necessarily, but it severely limits your options. Many medical schools (like Nottingham or Edinburgh) will flat-out reject candidates with a Band 4, and strongly penalize candidates with a Band 3. If you have a Band 3, you must strategically apply to universities that do not heavily weight the Situational Judgement Test (e.g., Bristol or Glasgow).
How do I calculate my UCAT decile?
You cannot manually calculate your exact decile because it requires the data of every single student who sat the exam in your cohort. The UCAT Consortium releases the official decile boundaries a few weeks after testing ends. Until then, candidates use historical data (like this calculator) to estimate their standing.
