What is a Good CGPA in Engineering (B.Tech) for Placements?

The Reality of Engineering Placements

If you are pursuing a B.Tech or B.E. in India, your entire 4-year journey ultimately leads to one high-stress season: Campus Placements.

During placement season, companies arrive at your college to hire hundreds of students. But before you are even allowed to sit for the coding round or the interview, you must pass the HR filter. That filter is entirely based on your CGPA.

So, what is actually considered a "good" CGPA in engineering?

1. The "Safe Zone" (7.0 to 7.5 CGPA)

If you want to sit for 90% of mass recruiters (like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, and Cognizant), you must maintain a CGPA of at least a 7.0 (or 70% in some boards).

A 7.0 CGPA is universally considered the baseline "First Class" tier. If your CGPA drops below a 6.5, you will find yourself blocked from applying to the majority of Day 1 and Day 2 IT companies.

  • The Goal: Never let your CGPA drop below a 7.0. If you are currently at a 6.8, use our Target GPA Calculator to figure out exactly what you need this semester to push it over the 7.0 line before placement season begins.
  • 2. The "Dream Company" Tier (8.0 to 8.5 CGPA)

If you are targeting product-based companies (like Amazon, Microsoft, Google, or top-tier startups), the rules change.

While some FAANG companies claim they don't care about CGPA, their automated applicant tracking systems definitely do. When 10,000 students apply for the same Amazon SDE role, HR uses an 8.0 CGPA cutoff to instantly filter out 60% of the resumes.

Furthermore, core engineering companies (like L&T, Tata Motors, or Texas Instruments) are notoriously strict. They often require an 8.0+ CGPA with zero active backlogs to even sit for the mechanical or electrical core interviews.

    3. The "Elite" Tier (9.0+ CGPA)

Is a 9.0+ CGPA necessary? For most jobs, no. A student with an 8.2 CGPA and incredible coding skills will beat a student with a 9.5 CGPA and poor coding skills in a technical interview every single time.

However, a 9.0+ CGPA becomes critical if you want to pursue higher education. If you plan to apply for an MS in the United States or a top MBA program (IIMs), your undergraduate CGPA is one of the most important factors in your application. Elite global universities expect elite academic consistency.

    The "No Active Backlogs" Rule

Your CGPA is meaningless if you have active backlogs (failed subjects that you haven't cleared yet). Almost every major company has a strict "Zero Active Backlogs" policy for placements.

If you have a backlog, your absolute first priority must be clearing it.

Do 10th and 12th Marks Matter?

Yes. Many mass recruiters have a "60-60-60" rule. You must have over 60% in your 10th boards, 12th boards, and B.Tech degree. If you have an 8.5 CGPA in college but got 58% in your 12th standard, you may still be rejected by strict HR policies.
