What is the Dean's List and How Do You Get On It?

The Ultimate Semester Achievement

Getting an 'A' in a difficult class feels great, but having the university officially recognize your academic excellence feels even better.

In the United States, the most common form of academic recognition is the Dean's List.

If you want to build a resume that stands out for elite internships, medical school, or top corporate jobs, having the Dean's List on your transcript is a massive advantage. Here is exactly what it is, and the math required to get on it.

What is the Dean's List?

The Dean's List is an academic award issued by a university's Dean of Students to recognize the top-performing students in a given college (e.g., The College of Engineering, The College of Business).

Unlike Latin Honors (Summa Cum Laude), which are only awarded once when you graduate, the Dean's List is awarded every single semester. This means if you have a bad Freshman year, you still have 6 more chances to make the Dean's List as a Sophomore, Junior, and Senior.

What GPA Do You Need?

There is no universal federal rule for the Dean's List. Every university sets its own cutoff, but they generally fall into one of two systems:
  • The Strict Cutoff System: The majority of state universities use a hard mathematical line. Usually, if you achieve a 3.50 GPA or higher for the semester, you automatically make the Dean's List.
  • The Percentile System: Elite private universities (like Ivy Leagues) often use a percentile system to combat grade inflation. They might decree that only the Top 10% of students in a given semester make the list. If everyone gets A's that semester, the cutoff could be as high as a 3.85 or 3.90.
  • The Hidden "Full-Time" Rule

A massive mistake students make is focusing only on their GPA while ignoring their credit load.

To be eligible for the Dean's List, you must be a full-time student. At most universities, this means you must complete at least 12 graded credits in the semester.

  • If you take 15 credits, but 4 of them are "Pass/Fail" (meaning only 11 credits receive letter grades), you are disqualified from the Dean's List, even if you get a 4.0 in the graded classes.
  • If you withdraw from a class ('W') and your total active credits drop from 14 to 11, you are disqualified.
  • How to Put the Dean's List on Your Resume

When you make the Dean's List, you will usually receive an official letter or email from the Dean, and a special notation will be permanently stamped on your transcript for that semester.

How to format it on your resume: Do not list it as a job or a separate massive section. Keep it clean under your "Education" section.
