Google famously abandoned its strict GPA cutoffs years ago. Former SVP of People Operations, Laszlo Bock, publicly stated that academic transcripts are worthless as a predictor of performance for anyone more than two years out of college.

However, for internships (like the STEP program or standard SWE internship), you have no prior work experience. Because they receive millions of applications, they still look at your grades. A high GPA proves you can learn complex topics quickly.

More important than your GPA are:

  • Data Structures & Algorithms: Can you solve medium/hard LeetCode problems optimally while communicating your thought process?
  • Personal Projects: Have you built full-stack applications or contributed meaningfully to open-source?
  • Demonstrated Interest: Do you participate in hackathons or coding clubs?

How to Strengthen a Low GPA Application

If your GPA is below a 3.0, do not let that stop you from applying. To bypass the automated resume screen:

  1. Get a Referral: Find a Google employee (a "Googler") via LinkedIn or your university alumni network. A direct internal referral often guarantees a recruiter will at least look at your resume.
  2. Leave it off your resume: If your GPA is below a 3.0, simply omit it. Highlight your technical projects and hackathon wins instead.
  3. Open Source Contributions: Having merged PRs in major open-source repositories is highly respected by Google engineers.
