GPA for McKinsey & Consulting

Quick Answer

  • Minimum GPA: 3.5
  • Preferred GPA: 3.7+
  • Is it a hard cutoff? Yes. The top consulting firms (MBB) are incredibly elitist regarding academics and routinely reject applicants with GPAs below their thresholds.

The "MBB" Standard

McKinsey & Company, Bain & Company, and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) form the "MBB"—the three most prestigious management consulting firms in the world. Their business model revolves around charging Fortune 500 companies millions of dollars for advice. To justify those fees, they must field teams of the absolute smartest people they can find.

As a result, your GPA is a critical factor in consulting recruiting. A 3.7+ is essentially the standard requirement to get an interview unless you have an extraordinary alternative background (like being an Olympic athlete or a military veteran).

Standardized Test Scores Matter Too

Unlike almost any other industry, McKinsey and top consulting firms will often ask for your SAT, ACT, or GMAT scores on your application. They use high standardized test scores alongside a high GPA as proof of raw intellectual horsepower.

What Happens After the Resume Screen?

If your GPA and resume are strong enough to secure an interview, your GPA ceases to matter. The entire interview process revolves around the Case Interview.

In a case interview, you are given a business problem (e.g., "A major airline is losing profitability. How would you fix it?") and you must structure a solution, do mental math, and present your findings on the spot. A 4.0 GPA cannot save you if you fail the case interview.

How to Overcome a Low GPA

If your GPA is below a 3.5, getting an MBB interview out of undergrad is statistically very unlikely. Your best strategies are:

  1. Target Tier 2 Firms: Firms like Deloitte Consulting, EY-Parthenon, Oliver Wyman, or specialized boutique consulting firms often have slightly lower GPA cutoffs (around 3.3 to 3.5).
  2. The MBA Route: The most common path into McKinsey for someone with a low undergrad GPA is to work for 3-4 years, get into a top-tier MBA program, and recruit for McKinsey as a post-MBA Associate. At that point, your undergrad GPA is ignored.
