How to Use This Calculator
Enter your current grade
This is your grade in the class before the final exam. Check your school's gradebook for the most accurate number.
Enter the final's weight
This is the percentage of your total grade that the final exam is worth. Common weights are 20%, 25%, 30%, or 40%. Check your syllabus.
Enter your target grade
The grade you want to finish with in the course. For an A, enter 93. For a B+, enter 87. The calculator instantly shows what you need.
The Formula
Required Final Score = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight
Where "Weight" is your final exam weight as a decimal (e.g., 30% = 0.30). This formula works for any course at any school.
Finals Week Triage Strategy
When finals week approaches, all study hours are not created equal. Use the concept of triage to maximize your Cumulative GPA.
- 1The "Safe" Classes: If you calculate that you only need a 30% on your final to keep an A, stop studying for that class. Review your notes once, take the exam, and accept the A. Your time is better spent elsewhere.
- 2The "Impossible" Classes: If you need a 115% on the final to bump your grade from a B to an A, and you're safely above a C threshold, accept the B. Don't waste 20 hours studying for a miracle that mathematically cannot happen.
- 3The "Borderline" Classes: This is where you deploy all your effort. If you need an 88% to get an A, or a 75% to pass the class, this is where your study hours actually translate to GPA points. Focus on these exams above all else.
