Study Hours Calculator
Find out exactly how much time you need to study each week to achieve your academic goals.
Number of credits you are taking this semester.
Easy: mostly electives. Hard: mostly STEM/major courses.
The 2-to-1 Study Rule
Most universities recommend the 2-to-1 rule: for every hour you spend in a college classroom, you should spend two hours studying outside of class. If you are taking a 15-credit semester, you are in class for 15 hours a week. Applying the rule, you need 30 hours of outside study time, making your total academic commitment 45 hours per week — equivalent to a full-time job.
However, not all classes are created equal. A heavy STEM course like Organic Chemistry might require a 3-to-1 or even 4-to-1 ratio to master the material, while an introductory elective might only demand a 1-to-1 ratio. Use the calculator above to map out your specific course load and build a realistic weekly schedule that protects your GPA.
