How to Use the Weighted Grade Calculator

Using our weighted grade calculator is the easiest way to figure out your exact standing in a class. First, look at your course syllabus to find the grading rubric. You will typically see categories like Homework, Quizzes, Midterms, and a Final Exam, each assigned a specific percentage weight.

Enter the name of each category, your score (as a percentage), and the weight assigned to it. If you have multiple assignments in one category (like 5 quizzes), you should calculate your average quiz score first, and enter that average along with the total weight for the quiz category. The calculator will automatically process the math and display your overall weighted grade instantly.

What Is a Weighted Grade?

In many educational institutions, not all assignments are created equal. A weighted grade system is a method of grading where different categories of coursework contribute differently to your final course grade based on their assigned importance, or "weight."

For example, a professor might decide that homework is worth 20% of your grade, midterms are worth 30%, and the final exam is worth 50%. This means that even if you score a perfect 100% on all your homework, it can only ever contribute a maximum of 20 points to your final grade. Doing poorly on a high-weight assignment (like a final exam) will drop your grade significantly more than failing a low-weight assignment (like a single pop quiz).

How to Find Out What You Need on Upcoming Assignments

One of the most stressful parts of being a student is not knowing what you need to score on an upcoming test to keep your A (or to just pass the class). Our calculator includes a powerful "TBD" (To Be Determined) feature specifically for this scenario.

To use it, enter all your completed assignments and their weights normally. Then, add a new row for your upcoming assignment (like the Final Exam). Enter its weight, but instead of entering a score, click the "TBD" toggle. The calculator will switch into reverse-calculation mode and tell you exactly what minimum score you must achieve on that assignment to reach your target class grade.

Why Your Weights Must Add Up to 100%

For a weighted grade calculation to be perfectly accurate representing a completed course, the sum of all your category weights must equal exactly 100%. If your weights add up to less than 100%, it means you are missing a grading category (like attendance or participation).

Our tool features a live weight validation bar that warns you if your weights do not sum to 100%. If you are calculating your grade in the middle of the semester before all assignments are complete, a total weight of less than 100% is normal. In this case, the calculator will show you your current standing based *only* on the coursework completed so far.

Weighted Grade Formula Explained

The mathematical formula used to calculate a weighted grade involves multiplying each individual score by its corresponding weight, summing those values, and then dividing by the total sum of the weights.

Weighted Grade = Σ (Score × Weight) / Σ (Weights)

For example, if you scored 90% on homework (worth 20%) and 80% on a test (worth 30%), the math is:
(90 × 0.20) + (80 × 0.30) = 18 + 24 = 42.
Since you've only completed 50% of the course weight so far, your current standing is 42 / 0.50 = 84%.
