How is a UK Degree Classified?
In the UK, your overall degree result is determined by your Weighted Average Mark (WAM), which is then mapped to an Honours classification.
| Honours Classification | Percentage Required | US Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| First-Class Honours (1st) | 70% - 100% | 4.0 (A) |
| Upper Second-Class Honours (2:1) | 60% - 69% | 3.3 - 3.9 (B+/A-) |
| Lower Second-Class Honours (2:2) | 50% - 59% | 2.7 - 3.2 (B-/B) |
| Third-Class Honours (3rd) | 40% - 49% | 2.0 - 2.6 (C) |
| Fail | 0% - 39% | 0.0 (F) |
WAM Formula: WAM = Σ (Module Mark × Module Credits) ÷ Σ (Total Credits)
This ensures that modules worth more credits have a proportionately larger impact on your final degree classification.
