How to Use the Grade Calculator

Almost all college and high school syllabi use a weighted grading system. This means that an A on a tiny homework assignment doesn't affect your grade as much as an A on a midterm exam.

Example Syllabus Breakdown:

  • Homework: 20% weight
  • Quizzes: 10% weight
  • Midterm Exam: 30% weight
  • Final Exam: 40% weight

To find your current grade, simply look at your syllabus, enter the category names and their weights into the calculator, and then input your current average score for each category.

Frequently Asked Questions

A weighted grade multiplies your score in each category by that category's weight (its percentage of your total grade). For instance, if exams are worth 50% of your total grade and you scored an average of 80% on them, exams contribute 40 percentage points (80 × 0.50) to your final grade.
If your syllabus says 'Exam 1: 100 points, Homework: 50 points' with no percentages mentioned, you have an unweighted point-based class. In that case, just add up all the points you've earned and divide by the total points possible to get your current grade percentage. You can also just enter each assignment as having an equal weight.
Our calculator automatically scales your current grade based on the weights you've entered. If you only enter categories that add up to 70% of the syllabus, the calculator will mathematically scale it up to 100% to show your current grade based strictly on the work you have completed so far.
If 'Homework' is worth 20% of your grade and you've had 5 assignments so far, first average those 5 assignment scores together. Enter that single average score into the 'Score' field for the Homework category.
