Official Australian Immigration Mapping
Despite Pearson's 2020 internal academic concordance update, the Australian Department of Home Affairs (DHA) continues to use the legacy mapping for all visa applications.

Did Pearson change the PTE to IELTS conversion scale?
Yes. In late 2020, Pearson released a new concordance report that made it slightly harder to achieve top IELTS equivalents (e.g., IELTS 8.0 now maps to PTE 84 instead of 79 on Pearson's new academic scale). However, the Australian Government has NOT adopted this new scale for immigration.
What PTE score do I need for Australian PR (Superior English)?
For Australian Permanent Residency (Subclass 189, 190, 491), the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) still strictly recognizes PTE 79 in each band as equivalent to IELTS 8.0, granting you the maximum 20 points for Superior English.
Is PTE easier than IELTS?
Most students find PTE easier to score high in, specifically in the Speaking and Writing sections, because it is entirely computer-marked. IELTS requires human examiners, which can introduce subjective grading.
What is Proficient English in Australia?
Proficient English gives you 10 PR points. It requires an IELTS score of 7.0 in all four bands, which maps directly to a PTE Academic score of 65 in all four communicative skills.

Academic Update Note
If you are using this conversion for university admissions (not immigration), check with the institution directly. Some universities have updated their requirements to Pearson's new concordance scale (where IELTS 8.0 = PTE 84).
