Frequently Asked Questions

How long is my PGWP in Canada?
For certificate and diploma programs between 8 and 24 months, your PGWP duration matches your program length exactly (e.g., an 8-month program = 8-month PGWP). For Bachelor's, Master's, PhDs, or any diploma lasting 2+ years, you will receive a 3-year PGWP.
Do 1 year masters get 3 year PGWP?
Yes! Starting February 15, 2024, Canada introduced a major positive rule change for Master's students. Even if your Master's degree was only 12 months or 16 months long, you are now automatically eligible for a full 3-year Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).
Can I get a PGWP from a private college?
Usually no. Most private colleges in Canada do not make you eligible for a PGWP. The primary exception is if the private college operates under the same rules as public colleges AND you are studying a degree program (like a Bachelor's). Simple diplomas from private career colleges do not qualify.
Are PGWP rules changing in 2024?
Yes, significantly. The biggest changes were: (1) 1-year Master's students now get 3-year PGWPs, and (2) students starting at Public-Private Partnership (PPP) colleges after May 15, 2024, are completely banned from receiving a PGWP.
