Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if an F-1 student drops below 12 credits?
As an undergraduate F-1 student, you are legally required by SEVP (Student and Exchange Visitor Program) to maintain a full course of study (12+ credits) every Fall and Spring semester. If you withdraw (W) from a class and drop below 12 credits without prior authorization, your SEVIS record may be terminated for 'Unauthorized Drop Below Full Course of Study'.
What is an RCL (Reduced Course Load)?
An RCL is prior authorization from your DSO (Designated School Official) allowing you to take fewer than 12 credits. You can only get an RCL for specific reasons: severe medical conditions, initial academic difficulties (first semester only), or being in your final semester to graduate.
Can I be deported for a low GPA?
Directly? No. However, if your GPA drops below a 2.0, your university will put you on Academic Probation. If you fail to raise it, the university will suspend or dismiss you. If you are suspended, you are no longer enrolled, which means your F-1 visa status is immediately terminated and you must leave the US.
Does a 'W' (Withdrawal) hurt my F-1 status?
A 'W' does not hurt your GPA. However, it DOES hurt your credit count. If you take 14 credits and withdraw from a 3-credit class, you now only have 11 active credits. This is an immediate violation of your F-1 visa unless you secured an RCL beforehand.
