20-Hour Rule: You cannot work more than 20 hours per week during the lecture period to maintain your student status (exempting you from health & unemployment tax deductions).
What is the 20-Hour Rule for Werkstudenten?
The 'Werkstudentenprivileg' (Working Student Privilege) dictates that if you work 20 hours or less per week during the lecture period, you are exempt from paying health, nursing care, and unemployment insurance contributions from your salary. You remain insured as a student.
Do I have to pay taxes as a working student in Germany?
In 2024, the basic tax-free allowance (Grundfreibetrag) is €11,784 per year (approx. €982 per month). If you earn less than this, you pay €0 in income tax. If you earn more, your employer will deduct income tax (Lohnsteuer) based on Tax Class 1, but you can usually claim most of it back by filing a tax return the following year.
What is Rentenversicherung (RV) and can I opt out?
Rentenversicherung is the statutory German pension insurance. The employee share is 9.3%. As a Werkstudent earning more than €538 per month, you MUST pay this. You cannot opt out. (If you earn under €538 on a Minijob, you can apply to opt out).
Do I pay Health Insurance (Krankenversicherung) from my salary?
No. Unlike normal employees, your employer does not deduct health insurance from your paycheck. Instead, you must pay your student health insurance (around €125-€130 per month for public insurance like TK or AOK) directly from your own bank account.
