Your raw or normalized marks (M) for the paper.

The cut-off marks for General Category for your paper.

Mean marks of top 0.1% candidates (usually between 65-85).

Understanding the Math

The GATE score is calculated using the formula:
Score = 350 + (900 - 350) × ((M - Mq) / (Mt - Mq))

  • If you score exactly the qualifying marks (M = Mq), your GATE score will be exactly 350.
  • If you score exactly the top 0.1% mean (M = Mt), your GATE score will be exactly 900.
  • You can score above 900 (up to 1000) if your marks exceed the mean of the top 0.1% of candidates.
What is the difference between GATE Marks and GATE Score?
GATE Marks are the actual raw marks you scored out of 100 on the exam. The GATE Score is a normalized value out of 1000 calculated using a specific formula by IITs to account for the difficulty level of the paper and to compare performance across different years.
How is the GATE Score actually calculated?
The formula is: Score = Sq + (St - Sq) * (M - Mq) / (Mt - Mq). Sq is always 350 (score for qualifying marks), St is 900 (score for top 0.1% marks). M is your marks, Mq is the qualifying cut-off, and Mt is the mean marks of the top 0.1% candidates.
Why do my marks matter less than the paper difficulty?
Because of Mt and Mq. If a paper is extremely hard, the qualifying marks (Mq) and top 0.1% marks (Mt) drop significantly. If you score 60 marks on a hard paper where Mt is 65, your GATE Score will be much higher than scoring 60 on an easy paper where Mt is 85.
What GATE score is required for PSUs?
Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) like ONGC, IOCL, and NTPC usually recruit candidates directly based on their GATE Score. For General category, a GATE Score of 800+ (or rank under 300) is typically required for core branches like Mechanical or Electrical.
