How much money do I need to study in New Zealand?
As of 2024, tertiary (university) students must prove they have $20,000 NZD per year for living expenses. Primary or secondary school students need $17,000 NZD per year. You must also prove you have enough to cover your first year's tuition and a return flight home.
Can I show the funds in my local currency?
Yes. Immigration New Zealand accepts funds in any easily traded currency, provided the converted amount matches the required NZD threshold at the time of application.
Do I need to pay my tuition fees before applying?
You do not necessarily have to pay them before applying, but if you haven't, you must prove you have the liquid cash in your bank account to pay the full first-year tuition in addition to your living costs.
Who can sponsor my student visa?
A sponsor must be a friend, family member, or organization willing to guarantee your financial support. They must complete an INZ sponsorship form and provide their own bank statements to prove they have the required funds.
