Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Texas Top 10% Rule?
The Texas Top 10 Percent Law guarantees Texas students automatic admission to all state-funded universities if they graduate in the top 10 percent of their high school class. The single exception is the University of Texas at Austin.
Why is UT Austin 6% instead of 10%?
Due to massive application volume, UT Austin is legally allowed to cap their automatic admissions. For Fall 2026 applicants, the automatic admission threshold for UT Austin is strictly the Top 6% of your graduating class.
Does automatic admission guarantee my major?
No. While the Top 6% or Top 10% rule guarantees you admission to the university, it does NOT guarantee admission to highly competitive specific colleges or majors within that university (such as the McCombs School of Business or the Cockrell School of Engineering at UT Austin).
How does my school determine my rank?
High schools use your weighted GPA to determine class rank. The exact formula (which honors/AP classes get extra weight) varies entirely by your local independent school district (ISD).
