ATAR to GPA Converter

Australian students applying internationally need to convert their ATAR (a percentile rank) into a GPA format. Discover your approximate US 4.0 GPA and AU 7-point GPA equivalent.

How ATAR to GPA Conversion Works

The ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) is a percentile ranking, not a grade. An ATAR of 90.00 does not mean you scored 90% on your exams; it means you performed better than 90% of your year group across the state.

Because the US and UK university systems use grade-based averages (GPA) rather than percentiles, admissions departments use historical performance data to map ATAR scores to approximate GPAs.

  • 95.00+ ATAR: Generally translates to a near-perfect US GPA (3.9 - 4.0) and indicates you are highly competitive for Ivy League admissions.
  • 90.00+ ATAR: Translates to roughly a 3.7+ US GPA or a 6.0 (Distinction average) on the Australian 7-point scale.
  • 80.00+ ATAR: Translates to roughly a 3.3+ US GPA or a 5.5 on the Australian scale.

Important Note: This conversion is an approximation used for general guidance. Every US university has its own internal rubric for evaluating international applicants. When applying, you should always submit your official ATAR and let the university calculate their own equivalent.
