485 Visa Duration Changes: The Post-Study Work Cuts
The Midnight Policy Shift
For years, the Subclass 485 (Temporary Graduate) Visa was the ultimate safety net for international students. It gave you up to 4 or 5 years of unrestricted work rights after graduation to gather the work experience needed for Permanent Residency.
In a massive crackdown on immigration numbers, the Australian Government recently slashed these durations. If you were planning your PR pathway based on the old rules, your timeline just collapsed.
The New 485 Duration Rules (Post-July Cuts)
The government reversed the generous extensions they handed out during the pandemic.
Crucially, the 2-year extension for "select degrees" (like IT, Engineering, and Nursing) has been completely abolished.
The Age Limit Shock
The most devastating change was the new age limit. Previously, you could apply for a 485 visa up until you turned 50. Now, the maximum eligible age is 35 years old (with an exception for Masters by Research/PhD graduates and Hong Kong/BNO passport holders, who can still apply up to 50).
If you started a Master's degree in Australia at age 34, and you graduate at 36, you are no longer eligible for the 485 visa. You must leave the country or find an employer sponsor immediately.
The Regional Extension Lifeline
The only remaining way to extend your 485 visa is to study and live in a "Designated Regional Area."
Note: To get this extension, you must live in that regional area for the entire duration of your first 485 visa.
Why the Timeline Matters
If you only have 2 years on your 485 visa, you are in a desperate race against time. You need 1 year of post-graduate work experience to pass your Skills Assessment (for many occupations), and you need time to clear NAATI, PTE, and wait for an invitation round.
You cannot afford a gap year. Use our 485 Visa Duration Calculator to map your exact expiration date and start planning your PR points today.
