Age Points: Why Turning 33 is the Worst Thing for Your PR

FastGPA Educational Team

The Biological Ticking Clock

In most countries, professional experience and maturity are rewarded. In the Australian immigration system, your age is treated as an expiring commodity.

The Department of Home Affairs wants young, tax-paying migrants who will not burden the healthcare system for decades. Because of this, the Points Test explicitly punishes you the moment you leave your twenties.

The Age Point Brackets (The Brutal Math)

When you submit your Expression of Interest (EOI), your age points are locked in at the exact moment you receive an invitation to apply, not when you submit the EOI.

  • 18 to 24 years old: 25 points.
  • 25 to 32 years old: 30 points (The Golden Era).
  • 33 to 39 years old: 25 points (The 5-Point Penalty).
  • 40 to 44 years old: 15 points (The Death Zone).
  • 45+ years old: 0 points (You are legally ineligible for most skilled visas).
  • The 33rd Birthday Disaster

The most stressful day in an international graduate's life is their 33rd birthday.

Imagine this scenario: You are 32 years old. You are sitting in the SkillSelect queue with 85 points as an IT professional. You are right on the edge of the cutoff.

At midnight on your 33rd birthday, the SkillSelect system automatically updates. You instantly drop to 80 points.

You have just been pushed out of the competitive zone. To recover those 5 points, you will have to spend $10,000 on a Professional Year, or move to regional Australia for a 491 visa.

    The Mature Age Trap

If you decide to come to Australia to study a Master's degree at age 35, you face a near-impossible uphill battle for independent PR.

  • You will graduate at age 37 (25 Age Points).
  • You will have less time to gather post-graduate work experience.
  • Because of recent changes to the 485 Graduate Visa (which dropped the eligible age limit to 35), you won't even qualify for a post-study work visa. You will have to rely on an Employer Sponsored Visa (TSS 482) instantly upon graduation.
  • The Strategy

If you are 31 or 32, you are in an emergency state. Do not wait for a 189 invitation. You must actively hunt for state sponsorship (190) or regional sponsorship (491) immediately before you hit that 33rd birthday cliff.
