Converting Indian CBSE to Australian ATAR

The International Admissions Algorithm

Australia is one of the most popular destinations for Indian students. If you are applying for an undergraduate degree (like a Bachelor of Computer Science or a Bachelor of Commerce) straight out of high school, the Australian university must figure out if you meet their academic threshold.

Australian students use an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) out of 99.95. Indian students use a percentage out of 100% from their Class 12 Boards (CBSE, CISCE, or State Boards).

The General Conversion Rule (CBSE / CISCE)

Every Australian university has a slightly different conversion table, but for Group of Eight (Go8) universities like UNSW or Melbourne University, the calculation usually follows a strict pattern:

They calculate your average based on the Best 4 Academic Subjects (excluding subjects like Physical Education or local languages).

  • 90% - 95%+ Average: Roughly equates to an ATAR of 95.00+. (Competitive for highly selective Engineering, Law, and pre-med pathways).
  • 85% - 89% Average: Roughly equates to an ATAR of 85.00 - 90.00. (Safe for almost all standard Commerce, IT, and Science degrees at Go8 universities).
  • 75% - 80% Average: Roughly equates to an ATAR of 75.00 - 80.00. (Sufficient for most degrees at mid-tier universities like RMIT, Macquarie, or QUT).
  • The State Board Penalty

Australian universities generally trust the centralized CBSE (All India Senior School Certificate Examination) and CISCE boards.

If you studied under a State Board (e.g., Maharashtra State Board, Tamil Nadu State Board), universities often apply a penalty to your score because they deem state grading to be less rigorous or less standardized.

  • An 85% in CBSE might grant you entry, but you might need a 90% or 92% in a State Board to get into the exact same course.
  • English Language Prerequisites

Even if you score 99% in CBSE English, most Australian universities will not accept it as proof of English proficiency. You must still sit a separate IELTS (usually requiring a 6.5 overall) or PTE Academic (usually 58+) test.
