Converting Singaporean A-Levels to Australian Universities
The Easiest Escape Route
The Singapore-Cambridge GCE A-Level examination is widely considered one of the most punishing high school curriculums in the world.
In Singapore, students fight brutally for 90 Rank Points just to secure a spot in a generic Computer Science degree at NUS or NTU.
If you look at the Australian university entry requirements, you will realize something shocking: Australian universities are incredibly easy for Singaporeans to get into.
How Australian Universities Calculate Your Score
Unlike NUS/NTU, which use a complex 90 Rank Point system, Australian universities generally use a much simpler additive point system for Singaporean A-Levels.
Most Group of Eight (Go8) universities (like Monash, USYD, UNSW) calculate your score based on your best three H2 subjects, plus one H1 subject.
The points are usually allocated as follows:
(Note: H1 subjects are usually weighted at half the value, e.g., an A = 2.5 points).
The Massive Discrepancy
Let's say you score B, B, C in your H2 subjects, and a C in your H1. In Singapore, you will likely be rejected from all top-tier computing or business courses.
However, for Australian universities, that equates to roughly 12.5 points.
With mediocre grades by Singaporean standards, you are comfortably guaranteed entry into degrees that demand a 90+ ATAR from local Australian students.
The National Service (NS) Deferment
If you are a Singaporean male, you must serve 2 years of National Service (NS). Australian universities are highly accustomed to this. You can apply using your A-Level results in Year 12, receive your offer, and officially defer the offer for exactly 2 years while you serve in the military.
