Deferring University: The Ultimate Safety Net

Securing the Backup Plan

Year 12 (the HSC/VCE/QCE) is an incredibly stressful, year-long grind. By the time January rolls around and the university offers are released (via UAC, VTAC, QTAC), many 18-year-olds are entirely burnt out. The thought of immediately starting a 4-year Law degree in February is terrifying.

You want to take a Gap Year to travel Europe or work full-time to save money. But you are terrified that if you reject the offer, your ATAR will expire and you will never get back in.

The Deferment Process

Australian universities are highly accommodating to Gap Years. You do not have to reject your offer. Instead, you Defer it.

  • Accept the Offer First: When you log into the admissions portal, you must officially click "Accept Offer."
  • Apply for Deferment: Immediately after accepting, you click the "Defer" button.
  • The Lock-In: The university will hold your spot for exactly one year (sometimes up to two years, depending on the institution).
  • Why Deferring is Bulletproof

  • Protection Against Cut-offs: ATAR cut-offs fluctuate every year. If you got into a Science degree this year with an 85.00 ATAR, but next year the cut-off rises to 88.00, it does not matter. Because you deferred, your spot is guaranteed under the old rules.
  • No Financial Penalty: Deferring is free. You do not incur any HECS debt while you are deferred.
  • You Can Change Your Mind: If you defer to travel, but then a global pandemic hits and borders close, you can usually contact the university in late January and say, "Actually, I want to start now," and they will simply un-defer you.
  • The Exceptions

Some highly competitive courses (like direct-entry Medicine, some advanced Scholarships, or specific Music degrees requiring auditions) do not allow deferment. If you get an offer, you must take it immediately or lose it forever. Always read the specific conditions on your offer letter before you click the defer button.
