Securing the Backup Plan
Year 12 (the HSC/VCE/QCE) is an incredibly stressful, year-long grind. By the time January rolls around and the university offers are released (via UAC, VTAC, QTAC), many 18-year-olds are entirely burnt out. The thought of immediately starting a 4-year Law degree in February is terrifying.
You want to take a Gap Year to travel Europe or work full-time to save money. But you are terrified that if you reject the offer, your ATAR will expire and you will never get back in.
The Deferment Process
Australian universities are highly accommodating to Gap Years. You do not have to reject your offer. Instead, you Defer it.
Why Deferring is Bulletproof
The Exceptions
Some highly competitive courses (like direct-entry Medicine, some advanced Scholarships, or specific Music degrees requiring auditions) do not allow deferment. If you get an offer, you must take it immediately or lose it forever. Always read the specific conditions on your offer letter before you click the defer button.
