The WAM Cutoffs for Australian Graduate Programs (2026)

FastGPA Educational Team

The Corporate Filtering Machine

In March every year, the massive corporate graduate schemes open across Australia. A bank like CommBank might receive 15,000 applications for 200 graduate roles.

HR teams do not have the time to read 15,000 cover letters. They use automated Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to instantly delete the bottom 50% of applicants based on one single metric: Your WAM.

Here are the unwritten, real-world WAM cutoffs you must hit to survive the automated purge.

Tier 1: The Elite Bloodbath (75+ WAM Required)

If you want to work in high finance, elite consulting, or top-tier commercial law, you must maintain a Distinction average.

  • Investment Banking (Macquarie, Goldman Sachs, UBS): 75+ WAM is the absolute minimum. To be safe, you need an 80 WAM. They are brutally elitist.
  • Management Consulting (McKinsey, BCG, Bain): 75+ WAM, combined with heavy leadership in university societies (President of the Consulting Club).
  • Top Tier Law (King & Wood Mallesons, Herbert Smith Freehills): 75+ WAM in your Law units specifically. They will look at your transcript unit-by-unit.
  • Tier 2: The Prestigious Mainstream (65+ WAM Required)

This is where 80% of successful corporate graduates end up. These firms want smart students, but they value communication and teamwork just as highly as raw intelligence.

  • The Big 4 Accounting (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG): The official cutoff is usually a 65 WAM (Credit). If you have a 66 WAM, you will get the psychometric testing link.
  • Top Tech (Atlassian, Canva, Google Sydney): Tech firms are unique. They officially say "No WAM cutoff," but realistically, if your WAM is below a 65, your resume is ignored unless you have an incredible GitHub portfolio.
  • Major Banks (CommBank, NAB, ANZ): 65+ WAM for generalist roles. (75+ for their specialized quantitative trading desks).
  • Tier 3: The Engineering & Government Reality (50 - 60+ WAM)

  • Federal Government (Grad Programs): The Australian Public Service (APS) graduate programs generally require a passing degree. A 60 WAM is fine, provided you crush their extensive assessment centers.
  • Mining & Heavy Engineering (BHP, Rio Tinto): Engineering WAMs are notoriously low due to brutal math scaling. These companies often accept a 60 WAM, heavily prioritizing your 12-week practical work experience and willingness to relocate to regional WA or Queensland.
  • The Strategy for Final Year

If you are in your penultimate (second last) year, look at your current WAM. If you are sitting on a 63, you are in the danger zone. Missing the Big 4 cutoff by two marks is a tragedy.

Use our Target WAM Planner to calculate exactly what grades you need in your upcoming exams to drag your average across that magical 65 ATS threshold before the March recruitment window opens.
