Group of Eight (Go8) vs Regional Universities: The PR Strategy

FastGPA Educational Team

Prestige vs Permanent Residency

When international students look at Australia, they immediately apply to the Group of Eight (Go8): The prestigious, highly-ranked universities located in the massive capital cities (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane).

  • UNSW
  • University of Sydney
  • University of Melbourne
  • Monash University
  • Graduating from these universities looks fantastic on your resume if you intend to return to your home country. But if your goal is Australian Permanent Residency (PR), studying in Sydney or Melbourne is a massive strategic mistake.

    The Regional Migration Push

The Australian Government wants to reduce population congestion in Sydney and Melbourne. To do this, they heavily incentivize international students to study in "Designated Regional Areas."

(Note: "Regional" does not necessarily mean the outback. Entire major cities like Adelaide, Perth, the Gold Coast, and Hobart are officially classified as regional for migration purposes).

    The Three Massive Regional Advantages

If you choose to study at a regional university (e.g., the University of Adelaide, or the University of Western Australia), you unlock three massive migration advantages:

  • The +5 PR Points: When you apply for a points-tested skilled visa (like the 189 or 190), studying in a regional area for 2 years automatically grants you 5 extra points. In a hyper-competitive migration system, 5 points is the difference between an invitation and a rejection.
  • State Sponsorship (190/491 Visas): State governments (like South Australia or Western Australia) run their own migration programs. They overwhelmingly prioritize international students who graduated from their local universities. If you study in Sydney (NSW), but then try to apply for PR in South Australia, you will be sent to the bottom of the queue.
  • Extended 485 Graduate Visa: When you graduate, you receive a Temporary Graduate Visa. If you studied in Sydney, you get 2 years of work rights. If you studied in a regional area, you get an extra 1 to 2 years (e.g., 3 or 4 years total) to live and work in Australia, giving you much more time to secure an employer sponsor or build your PR points.
  • If you want to migrate, ignore the global rankings. Go to Adelaide or Perth. Use our PR Points Calculator to see how the regional bonus impacts your total score.
