HSC vs VCE vs QCE: Which State has the Hardest Curriculum?

FastGPA Educational Team

The Interstate Rivalry

Every year, high school students argue over which state has the most grueling final year. New South Wales students complain about the HSC exams. Victorian students cry over the VCE SACs. Queenslanders boast about their new QCE system.

Because the ATAR is a national ranking system, a 95.00 ATAR in Sydney allows you to apply for a degree in Melbourne exactly the same as a 95.00 ATAR from a Victorian student.

But behind the scenes, the assessment structures are radically different.

The HSC (New South Wales): The Exam Meatgrinder

The HSC is notoriously heavily weighted towards the final, high-stakes written exams in October/November.

  • Your school assessment mark makes up 50%, but that school mark is moderated against your school's performance in the final exam.
  • If you perform badly on the final day, your entire year of hard work is heavily dragged down.
  • HSC English Advanced is widely considered one of the most intellectually demanding mandatory subjects in the country.
  • The VCE (Victoria): The Constant SAC Stress

The VCE spreads the pain out over the entire year through SACs (School Assessed Coursework).

  • You are constantly sitting high-stress mini-exams every few weeks.
  • The VCAA statistical moderation process is complex. If your teacher sets easy SACs and your class scores highly, but the class bombs the final VCE exam, the VCAA will aggressively scale down every single SAC score in your school.
  • The QCE (Queensland): The New Contender

For decades, Queensland used the confusing 'OP' (Overall Position) system. In 2020, they finally joined the rest of Australia and adopted the ATAR.

  • QCE relies heavily on internal school assessments (which are endorsed by the QCAA) plus one external exam.
  • For math and science, the external exam is worth 50%. For humanities, it's worth 25%.
  • The Verdict

There is no 'easiest' state. The ATAR algorithm normalizes the data across the country to ensure fairness. A student in the 90th percentile of intelligence in NSW will get roughly the same ATAR if you dropped them into a school in Victoria.

Stop worrying about the state borders. Focus on your internal school ranking. Use our ATAR Calculator to track your progress based on your state's specific grading system.
