The Ticking Clock
English proficiency tests (IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT) are expensive (often $400+ AUD) and highly stressful. Once you achieve your target score, you assume you are set for life.
However, both universities and the Australian Department of Home Affairs place strict validity limits on your test results.
The University Cut-off (2 Years)
Most Australian universities require your English test results to be no more than 2 years old at the time your degree commences.
If you took the IELTS when you were 16, and try to use those results to apply for university when you are 19, the university will reject your application and force you to sit the exam again.
The Visa and Migration Cut-off (2 to 3 Years)
The Department of Home Affairs has different validity periods depending on the visa you are applying for:
The 485 Visa Trap
The most common mistake international students make occurs when applying for their Temporary Graduate Visa (Subclass 485).
They assume the English test they took 3 years ago to get into university is still valid. It isn't. The 485 visa requires a valid English test taken within the last 1 year (or 3 years depending on recent shifting legislative changes).
Thousands of students graduate, rush to lodge their 485 visa, and have it refused because their IELTS expired last month. They are then forced to leave the country.
Always check the dates on your scorecard. If it is getting close to the 2-year mark, book a PTE refresher immediately. Use our Visa Points Calculator to see if bumping your expired 'Proficient' score up to 'Superior' is worth the extra study effort.
Check Your Migration Points
Ensure your English score is still valid to claim maximum points for your PR application.
