PTE vs IELTS: Which English Test is Actually Easier?

FastGPA Educational Team

The End of the IELTS Monopoly

For decades, if you wanted to study in Australia, you had to take the IELTS (International English Language Testing System). It was a grueling, paper-based exam where a human examiner judged your speaking and writing abilities.

Today, the landscape has entirely shifted. The Australian Department of Home Affairs accepts both IELTS and the PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English).

If you want to pass on your first attempt, you should book the PTE.

The Human Bias vs AI Scoring

The fundamental difference between the two tests is how they are marked.

  • IELTS Writing: A human examiner reads your essay. If your handwriting is messy, or they are tired, or they subjectively disagree with your essay structure, you might score a 6.5 instead of the required 7.0.
  • PTE Writing: You type your essay into a computer. An AI algorithm grades it. The AI does not care about your 'style'. It scans for grammar, vocabulary, and spelling. If you follow a rigid, pre-memorized essay template perfectly, the AI will routinely award you a perfect score (79+).
  • The Speaking Section

  • IELTS Speaking: You sit in a room with an examiner. If you are nervous, stumble over your words, or lack eye contact, your score drops.
  • PTE Speaking: You speak into a microphone in a room full of other test-takers. The AI grades your fluency and pronunciation. If you speak continuously without pausing (even if your grammar is slightly wrong), the algorithm rewards you for 'oral fluency'.
  • The Result Turnaround

IELTS results can take 3 to 13 days. PTE results are often delivered to your email in under 24 hours.

If your university application deadline is closing, or your visa is about to expire, you do not have time to wait two weeks for a human to grade your essay.
