The 485 Graduate Visa Age Limit: The Drop to 35 Years Old
The Mature-Age Migration Crisis
For years, international students in their 30s and 40s brought their families to Australia to study a Master's degree. The plan was simple: Graduate, get a Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate Visa, work full-time for 2 to 3 years, and secure Permanent Residency (PR).
On July 1, 2024, the Australian Government destroyed that pathway overnight.
The Age Limit Reduction
To curb total migration numbers, the government drastically lowered the maximum age limit for the Subclass 485 Graduate Visa (Post-Vocational and Post-Higher Education streams).
The Masters Student Trap
Imagine you are 33 years old. You arrive in Australia to commence a 2-year Master of Business Administration (MBA).
You pay $90,000 in tuition. You graduate. You are now 35 years and 2 months old.
When you go to apply for the 485 Graduate Visa so you can finally work full-time and earn back your money, the portal rejects you. You aged out. Because you cannot get the 485 visa, you cannot stay in Australia. You must pack your bags and leave the country within 28 days.
The Exceptions (Masters by Research & PhD)
There are only two main exceptions to this brutal new rule:
If you are currently 32 years or older and planning to study a standard Bachelor's or Master's by Coursework in Australia with the intent of migrating, stop immediately. The math no longer works.
