Subject Prerequisites: Why a 99 ATAR Can Get You Rejected
The 99.00 Rejection Letter
Imagine this: You are the Dux of your school. You scored a massive 98.50 ATAR by taking Legal Studies, History, Drama, and General Mathematics.
You apply for a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) at a Group of Eight university. The ATAR cutoff is 85.00.
You are rejected.
Why? Because you failed to read the fine print in the university handbook regarding Subject Prerequisites.
Prerequisite vs Assumed Knowledge
When you select a university course on UAC or VTAC, there are two terms you must understand perfectly before you pick your Year 11 subjects.
1. Subject Prerequisite (The Hard Barrier) A prerequisite is a mandatory legal requirement. For Engineering, the university might state: "Prerequisite: Mathematical Methods (or equivalent)." If you did not complete Mathematical Methods in Year 12, the admissions system will physically block your application. It does not matter if your ATAR is 99.95. You are ineligible.
(Note: Some universities offer "bridging courses" over the summer to fast-track you, but you cannot rely on this).
2. Assumed Knowledge (The Soft Barrier) For a Bachelor of Commerce, the university might state: "Assumed Knowledge: Advanced Mathematics." This means you can get into the degree with General Math. The university will not block you. However, on day one of your first lecture, the professor will teach calculus assuming you already know it. If you don't, you will likely fail the first semester.
The 'Medicine' Requirement
Many students dream of studying Medicine but hate science. You cannot study Undergraduate Medicine without taking Chemistry. It is the most common hard prerequisite across the country.
The Year 10 Warning
By the time you are in Year 12 stressing about your ATAR, it is too late to fix this. You make these critical choices at the end of Year 10.
Before you drop hard sciences to maximize your ATAR, check the exact prerequisites of your target degrees. Use our ATAR Calculator to see if you can achieve the required rank while keeping the mandatory prerequisite subjects in your portfolio.
