How does GEMSAS calculate GPA?

When applying for graduate-entry medicine in Australia via the GEMSAS consortium (which includes universities like Melbourne, Deakin, ANU, UQ, Griffith, UNDA, and Macquarie), your GPA is usually calculated differently than your standard university transcript.

GEMSAS looks at your most recently completed 3 years of Full-Time Equivalent (FTE) study. It divides these into:

  • Final Year (Final-1): Your most recent year. Multiplied by 3.
  • Final minus 1 (Final-2): The year before that. Multiplied by 2.
  • Final minus 2 (Final-3): The oldest of the 3 years. Multiplied by 1.

The GEMSAS Formula

GEMSAS GPA = [ (Final-3 × 1) + (Final-2 × 2) + (Final-1 × 3) ] / 6

*Note: Some consortium members (like UQ) may use an unweighted average instead, but the 3x/2x/1x system is the standard GEMSAS weighting used by the majority of institutions.
