Australian Honours Classes
In Australia, an Honours year (or a 4-year embedded Honours degree) usually awards a distinct Honours Class based on your performance. This is critical for getting into PhD programs or securing competitive graduate jobs.
| Class | WAM Range | Significance |
|---|---|---|
| First Class (H1) | 80 - 100% | Guarantees direct entry to PhD. Strongest chance for university medals and RTP scholarships. |
| Second Class Div A (H2A) | 75 - 79% | Usually acceptable for Masters by Research or coursework. May require negotiation for PhD. |
| Second Class Div B (H2B) | 70 - 74% | Good for employment. Generally requires coursework Masters before applying for a PhD. |
| Third Class (H3) | 65 - 69% | Minimum passing Honours grade. Further research study is unlikely without significant industry experience. |
Note: Some universities use 85+ for H1 (e.g. UNSW), while others use 80+ (e.g. USYD, Melbourne). This calculator uses the standard 80+ cut-off.
Thesis vs Coursework Weighting
Your Honours WAM is an average of your thesis and coursework marks, weighted by credit points.
In many Australian universities, an Honours year consists of 48 total credit points (1.0 EFTSL). The thesis usually accounts for 24 to 36 of those credit points, meaning your thesis mark alone can determine 50% to 75% of your final Honours classification.
