Frequently Asked Questions

In Queensland, your ATAR is calculated by QTAC (Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre) using scaled results from your best five QCE (Queensland Certificate of Education) subjects. Each subject's grades are statistically moderated by QCAA (Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority) to account for differences between student cohorts — subjects where high-achieving students perform well tend to scale up. An English subject with a minimum C grade is compulsory for ATAR eligibility. The final ATAR is a percentile rank from 0.00 to 99.95.
In QCE, Specialist Mathematics typically scales the most, followed by Mathematical Methods, Physics, and Chemistry. These subjects attract academically strong cohorts which causes statistical moderation to scale their grades upward. Subjects like Physical Education, Film and Television, and some vocational subjects tend to scale down. Importantly, you should choose subjects you'll excel in — a lower grade in a scaling subject may be worse than a higher grade in a neutral one.
Queensland switched from the OP (Overall Position) system to the ATAR system in 2020, with the class of 2020 being the first cohort to receive ATARs instead of OPs. The change was part of a national alignment effort to make Queensland's Year 12 results comparable with other states. Under the old OP system, students received a rank from 1 (best) to 25. Under the ATAR system, Queensland students now receive a score from 0.00 to 99.95 like all other Australian states.
Entry requirements at UQ vary by course. As a guide for 2026 entry: Arts/Business require around ATAR 70–80, Engineering around 85+, Law around 97+, and Medicine requires Graduate Entry (GAMSAT-based) rather than direct ATAR entry. UQ also offers adjustment factors (up to +5 ATAR points) for Educational Access Scheme, Rural/Remote background, and Excellence in Co-Curricular Activities. Always check the specific course page on UQ's website for the most current entry requirements.
ATAR eligibility in Queensland requires completing Year 12 with at least five General subjects (including English) that all have an external assessment component. Applied subjects and vocational qualifications do not contribute to ATAR. However, some Applied and vocational subjects can be counted toward the QCE itself (satisfying school completion requirements), even if they don't contribute to the ATAR calculation. Students who do not receive an ATAR can still pursue TAFE pathways or use selection rank adjustments for some university courses.
