What is a WAM?
In Australia, your Weighted Average Mark (WAM) is often more important than your GPA. While a GPA uses broad grade bands (like converting an 85% and a 99% both to a 7.0), your WAM uses your exact percentage mark.
WAM is calculated by multiplying each subject's percentage mark by its credit point value, adding those together, and dividing by the total number of credit points attempted.
Why is WAM important?
- Honours Entry: Admission to Honours usually requires a minimum WAM (typically 65+).
- Graduate Programs: Many competitive graduate roles and Masters programs screen applicants based on WAM.
- Distinction: Graduating "With Distinction" is usually awarded to students with a WAM of 75 or higher.
Are Failed Subjects Included?
At most Australian universities (like the University of Melbourne, Monash, UNSW, and USYD), failed subjects are included in your WAM calculation.
This means if you score 35% in a 6-credit subject, that 35% brings down your overall average. Some universities or specific faculties may exclude fails, or exclude first-year fails, so our calculator includes a toggle to easily turn fail-inclusion on or off.
